Background of the Study

Nurse managers are pivotal in healthcare settings, where they not only manage staff but also ensure that health policies are effectively implemented and adhered to (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). They bridge the gap between clinical staff and hospital management, contributing to improved patient care and staff performance. One of their key roles is the implementation of workplace health policies, which include infection control measures, workplace safety standards, and policies for managing chronic conditions among healthcare workers (Okafor et al., 2024). At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, nurse managers are expected to oversee the application of these policies within the hospital, ensuring that healthcare workers are protected and that patients receive high-quality care.

Workplace health policies are essential for maintaining the health of hospital staff, reducing healthcare-associated infections, and ensuring a safe working environment for everyone. However, challenges such as inadequate resources, poor communication, and resistance from staff can hinder the successful implementation of these policies (Bello et al., 2024). This study seeks to investigate the role of nurse managers in the effective implementation of these policies at FMC, Makurdi, providing insights into the challenges and strategies for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of workplace health policies, the role of nurse managers in their effective implementation is often underappreciated. At FMC, Makurdi, there have been reports of inconsistent policy application, leading to safety concerns among staff and patients. This research will focus on understanding the nurse managers' role in overcoming these barriers, evaluating their strategies, and determining the outcomes of their efforts.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of nurse managers in implementing workplace health policies at FMC, Makurdi.
  2. To identify the challenges nurse managers face in the implementation of these policies.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the implementation of workplace health policies at FMC, Makurdi.

Research Questions

  1. How do nurse managers implement workplace health policies at FMC, Makurdi?
  2. What challenges do nurse managers encounter while implementing workplace health policies?
  3. What strategies can be adopted to enhance the implementation of health policies by nurse managers at FMC, Makurdi?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse managers who are well-supported with resources and training are more successful in implementing workplace health policies.
  2. Challenges such as insufficient staffing and poor communication hinder the effective implementation of health policies.
  3. Providing nurse managers with better tools and training will lead to more effective implementation of workplace health policies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurse managers at FMC, Makurdi, and their role in implementing workplace health policies. Limitations may include the potential for response biases from participants and variations in institutional policies across different departments.
